Say GOODBYE to dark spots

We’ve discussed a lot of topics over the last few months but today we are going to be talking about a skin concern that doesn’t get talked about enough: hyperpigmentation. You may have heard of this term before but what is hyperpigmentation and why does it happen? Let’s jump in discuss the science behind pigmentation, and my new fave product which helps combat signs of pigmentation in (can you believe it) days! Keep scrolling to see it and believe it.

What is hyperpigmentation?

Well if we go right in and break the word down hyper means too much or an excessive amount of something. And pigmentation, well that is talking about the color or pigment of our skin which is created by melanin. Melanin is created in our melanocytes and it is responsible for giving our skin and hair its color. Melanin also absorbs harmful UV rays and protects us against cellular damage caused by UV exposure. Hyperpigmentation is what happens when your skin creates more melanin which can result in dark spots and uneven skin tone.

What causes hyperpigmentation?

Sun exposure: One of the functions of the skin is protection. Our skin protects us from many things, but UV and sun exposure is a huge one. When your skin is exposed to UV light repeatedly, sun damage can occur. Your skin produces more melanin to protect itself from UV damage, but this can cause brown spots and uneven skin tone. Using SPF is very important in combatting this and fighting signs of skin aging.

Hormones: Hormones can play a key role in pigmentation challenges. Changes in hormone levels can trigger an overproduction of melanin which can lead to Melasma. Melasma can be a result of hormonal changes during pregnancy, but can also be cause by things like birth control.

Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation: Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation happens when there is an injury or inflammation to the skin and the skin becomes darkened and uneven when it has healed. When your skin becomes inflamed, melanocytes are triggered and they release excessive melanin as a form of protection to help your skin heal. People of all skin tones are affected by this.
