Before you get drifted away in deep thought... I'll breakdown what a peptide even is. (mom talk) Peptides are like Legos. A chain of Legos that make up what's called a protein. The most vital protein within your skin is collagen. Like proteins, peptides are chains of two or more amino acids held together by peptide bonds. The term oligopeptide is used to refer to a peptide. Only with fewer members of amino acids as opposed to a polypeptide, which is a peptide comprised of several amino acids. These short chains are able to penetrate the top layer of the skin giving all the anti aging benefits such as; stimulating collagen production, helps fight fine lines and wrinkles all the while brightening the skin. Does that help a little bit? A similar but more intense ingredient like retinol or a renoid. "Retinoids are a class of compounds derived from vitamin A, which is commonly used in skincare," says Dr. Mahto. Which are designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation after 12 weeks of use. While retinoids remain the wrinkle-fighting gold standard, if your skin doesn't vibe with them, peptides are a great replacement. Oligopeptides are becoming the more preferred ingredient because they have fewer side effects compared to retinoids. Most of us want smoother and firmer skin, so most of us can benefit from oligopeptides! As we age our collagen and elastin and many other things slow down and don't replenish as fast as we break them down. This ingredient is for everyone and can be taken a preventative measures as well. There's nothin' to lose, right?!
- Reduced wrinkles: Collagen can plump the skin and lips. And when our skin is firmer and plumper, wrinkles and fine lines will be less visible.
- Increase elasticity: peptides also make up elastin fibers, also a type of protein. These fibers make skin look firmer and tauter.
- Calm inflammation: Peptides can help ease inflammation, repair damaged skin and even out skin tone.
