EccoTips: How to Contour Like A Pro

Eccotique Contouring 101

Love them or despise them, you have to admit – ever since the Kardashians arrived on reality (or lack there of) TV, women everywhere have idolized their expert ability to contour their faces using makeup. We admire their (and their makeup artist’s) skill, and believe that a contoured face shapes, defines, and brings out the natural beauty in every woman.

Contouring is a makeup technique that isn’t new and has been popular with celebrities worldwide – it’s designed to enhance all your angles, and reflect light in just the right places for the illusion of a more defined facial structure. This look is universally flattering, and can be done for an everyday or evening look.

Here are some EccoTips on how to achieve a perfectly contoured appearance that is subtle enough for everyday makeup looks – the goal is for no one to notice your contouring. Be prepared to hear the words “you’re glowing!” and “have you done something different?” more often!

What you’ll need:

  • A large makeup brush
  • A contouring foundation sponge
  • 2 shades of Aveda Inner Light Mineral Tinted Foundation: one that matches your skin tone, one 1-3 shades darker than your skin depending on the desired level of contouring you want to achieve.
  • 1 shade of Aveda Inner Light Concealer, 1 shade lighter than your skin tone
  • Aveda Inner Light Mineral Loose Powder
  • Uruku Bronzer (optional)

How to achieve an everyday contoured look:

  1. Create a smooth, even “skin canvas.” Apply Aveda Inner Light Mineral Tinted Foundation in a shade that matches your skin tone perfectly. To create an “airbrush-like” effect, apply your foundation with a damp makeup sponge and dab on gently. Layer product or apply using your clean fingers if more coverage is needed.
  2. Now is the fun part! Take your Aveda Inner Light Concealer in a shade lighter than your skin tone, and dab product on the bridge of your nose, under your eyes, down the side of your cheek closest to your nose, on the top of your chin and under your eyebrow on your brow bone. You want to add the concealer everywhere the natural light hits.
  3. Take your damp sponge and blend the concealer using a feather light, tapping motion until desired effect is achieved.
  4. Take your darker shade of Aveda Inner Light Mineral Tinted Foundation and dab on to the “shadow” portions of your face: do the “kissy face, and dab into the hollows of your cheeks, on your temples and under your chin. BLEND WELL.
  5. Using a large face makeup brush, dust a light layer of Aveda Inner Light Mineral Loose Powder over your entire face to set your makeup.
  6. Finish off your look with Aveda’s Uruku Bronzer in areas you want extra bronzing or shading.

Easier than you thought, right? After you have mastered the art of natural contouring, try adding a shimmer powder on your lighter areas, or deepening your shaded areas for a night out on the town. Make sure this application is always done with natural light around, and always always get your foundation matched for you by an Eccotique Esthetician to ensure you have the perfect shade! :)

Happy primping!
